Rishi Kapoor

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor passed away in Mumbai on Thursday. The actor was admitted to the H N Reliance Foundation Hospital on Wednesday morning.

His death comes a day after after his “D-Day” co-star Irrfan Khan passed away, also of cancer. Three months ago, the disease claimed his sister Ritu Nanda.

Actor Rishi Kapoor was taken to hospital on Wednesday, which his brother Randhir Kapoor confirmed to news agency PTI. “He is in the hospital. He is suffering from cancer and he has some breathing problem, so he has been admitted to the hospital. He is stable now.”

The cause of death remains unknown. While the actor’s last rites to be performed at Chandanwadi Crematorium in Kalbadevi, Mumbai.

Kapoor made a successful on-screen pair with actress Neetu Singh. In one of Bollywood’s most enduring love stories, they took that romance off-screen as well when they got married in 1980.

Their son, Ranbir Kapoor, is a successful Bollywood star in his own right.

Bollywood, united by grief, has poured it’s heart out on social media. From Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth, Lata Mangeshkar and Kamal Haasan to Priyanka Chopra and Akshay Kumar, many stars posted eulogies for the Bollywood veteran. Superstar Rajinikanth tweeted: “Heartbroken … Rest In Peace … my dearest friend Rishi Kapoor.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his tweet stated, Multifaceted, endearing and lively…this was Rishi Kapoor Ji. He was a powerhouse of talent. I will always recall our interactions, even on social media. He was passionate about films and India’s progress. Anguished by his demise. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti.
