Kuvempu’s Mantra Mangalya concept of weddings is a 20th-century cultural phenomenon in Karnataka that has grown in popularity well into the 21st century. This rational wedding concept, which discards the usual lavishness and unnecessary spending associated with Indian wedding ceremonies, continues to captivate newer generations.
Actor Mithra, a popular comedy star in the Kannada film industry, inspired by Kuvempu, has given the idea a new twist.
“Kuvempu started the Mantra Mangalya concept not only to instill rationalism but also to cut down on the costs of the typical ‘big fat Indian weddings.’ His son, Poornachandra Tejaswi, was the first to get married under the Mantra Mangalya idea. The number of guests was limited, and friends and relatives were invited to come home and bless the couple whenever they wished.
Now, it’s not just weddings that are expensive — there are dozens of ceremonies and rituals in our lives like naming ceremonies, baby showers, etc., which also cost a lot. Why not apply the Mantra Mangalya concept to all of them?” says Mithra.
Taking the idea further, Mithra has now given it new wings. “We have designed a resort where not only Mantra Mangalya weddings but also other family events, friendly get-togethers, and corporate business events can be held. The resort is named Mantra Mangalya in honour of Kuvempu’s thoughts. All the rooms in the resort are named after Kannada authors and historical figures, with small libraries in each one. Everyone visiting Mantra Mangalya will experience Kannada culture and heritage, apart from the cuisine,” says Mithra.
Limiting the budget is the central idea behind Mithra’s venture. “Not everyone can afford the luxury of a resort for family events. Maybe only 50 or 100 people will attend a baby shower or naming ceremony, and they’re often on a tight budget. We will help them design the event within their means but there will be no compromise on quality. The best chefs, event organisers, and designers I’ve known all my life are with me in Mantra Mangalya,” says Mithra.
Mantra Mangalya is filled with luxuries also, including an amphitheatre that can seat 500 people. However the heart remains tradition with a ‘Thotti Mane’ being the centrepiece. Five events can be held simultaneously at Mantra Mangalya.
The Mantra Mangalya Resort is located in Anchehalli, Turuvekere, Tumakuru district, around 150 kilometres from Bengaluru. Mithra had the idea, but it was his businessman friend, S.P. Dayanand, who made it possible by providing the land and financing the project. “When the intention is good, things always find a way,” says Mithra.
